US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will arrive in the Russian city of Sochi to hold talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday, May 14, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told TASS on Monday.
Britain's foreign minister, Jeremy Hunt, said the United Kingdom was anxious about the risk of accidental conflict between Iran and the US.
Britain's foreign secretary offered the warning as Saudi Arabia said two of its oil tankers were sabotaged and received "significant damage" Sunday off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, one of the vessels as it was heading to pick up Saudi oil to take to the United States.
Pompeo will meet this week with Putin to discuss "a broad range of issues" and hoped to forge a better working relationship with the Russian strongman.
EU foreign policy chief said the European Union supports the worldwide nuclear deal with Iran and wants rival powers to avoid any further escalation over the issue.
The U.K. and European partners, including France and Germany believe the deal reached with Iran in 2015 should continue and they have expressed regrets over the one-sided US withdrawal from the agreement.
Iran's move was followed by an ultimatum to European Union officials to take action against USA -imposed sanctions crippling Iranian oil and banking - or risk seeing Iran walk away from other commitments.
The US pulled out of the accord saying the agreement does nothing to stop Iran from developing missiles or destabilising the Middle East.
"Where we have concerns, we're going to raise them directly, narrow those differences, and find areas where we can cooperate to protect and advance our interests", the official said, speaking anonymously to brief reporters on behalf of the department.
The EU is trying to implement a new channel to allow Iran to sell its oil and circumvent newly-instated USA sanctions, but setting it up is proving complex.
Pompeo will also travel to Moscow while in Russian Federation, where he will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and pay his respects to the Soviet troops who died during World War II, when Russian Federation and the United States fought together as allies to eradicate evil.
There he was due to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to discuss several issues: The challenges in the relationship between the two countries, arms control policies and the situation in Ukraine, Venezuela, Iran, Syria and North Korea.
Despite the tensions, the Europeans insist only the International Atomic Energy Agency can judge whether Iran remains in compliance with the nuclear agreement.
