As forecasters project big spring flooding along the MS, leaders in flood-prone Clarksville are preparing to weather the storm.
The Missouri River was still rising on Saturday evening, local TV station KMTV reported, with a record crest of more than 47 feet expected early on Tuesday in Brownville, Nebraska, about 70 miles south of Omaha in the eastern corner of the state.
Nith River (New Hamburg & Ayr): Flood coordinators are advised to monitor conditions and prepare to warn residents in Warning Zone 2 as needed. Emergency workers used boats to evacuate residents. Within hours of that request, anyone left in the city found all access in and out cut off by floodwaters from the Elkhorn River.
A second Nebraska man died at a hospital in Lincoln after being caught in floodwaters across the state line in Iowa, according to the Fremont County, Iowa, Sheriff's Office. "We need you to follow instructions and evacuate when we say you need to evacuate".
On Saturday, Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts tweeted his praise of fellow Nebraskans. The state's emergency operations center has already been activated. Potential for ice jams is possible in low lying areas typically prone to flooding.
A Nebraska utility is adding sandbags to the levee that protects its nuclear power plant along the swollen Missouri River. It is forecast to rise above flood stage by late Friday afternoon and crest around 27 feet Saturday morning, resulting in moderate flooding.
River levels will be on the rise through Friday night with a few expected to reach flood stage over NE Iowa and many others to come close to flood stage. Do not enter flood waters.
Nebraska has had two flood-related fatalities this week, Wight said.
A flood warning has been issued for the Missouri River at Kansas City as well. The two cities have taken several measures such as home buyouts and levees since then. The victim, 55-year-old Aleido Rojas Galan of Norfolk, Nebraska, was one of three men trapped by flooding in the town of Riverton after their vehicle was swept away and they tried to swim to safety. There remains some uncertainty in the current track of this weather system which may impact the timing and amount of rainfall and snow melt associated with this event.
A flood alert has been issued for Sheffield, as heavy rain drenches the city.
A blizzard crippled parts of Wyoming, Colorado and western Nebraska on Wednesday. There are no immediate reports of any injuries, but homes and trees were damaged and power was knocked out to thousands. The county has also had some ditch flooding throughout the county.
