Canterbury Police NZ have tweeted of a critical incident in Deans Avenue, Christchurch. The other attack was on a mosque in a suburb called Linwood.

Police commissioner Mike Bush says all schools in the city has been placed in lockdown in response to "a serious ongoing firearms incident".

Bush urged anyone who had meant to visit a mosque in New Zealand not to go, to "close your doors until you hear from us again".

Local media said another mosque had been evacuated. One man wearing a prayer robe was covered in blood but appeared to be uninjured.

Police also confirmed "there have been a number of fatalities" without giving a specific number.

The man, who is a wheelchair, gave a chilling account of the event. The players just started running when they heard the shots.
