Markey and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY led the unveiling of a resolution laying the groundwork for aggressive policy proposals created to combat climate change, which critics argue could be too costly to the economy and in some cases outright not feasible.
Further, Ocasio-Cortez envisions upgrading all existing buildings, working with farmers to "eliminate pollution" and building charging stations for electric cars "everywhere", making high-speed rail so effective that "air travel" is unnecessary.
"So let me ask you then", Cheney asked, "are there any other witnesses on the panel who do support the Green New Deal?".
WASHINGTON ― Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) promised on Tuesday that he would allow a vote on the Green New Deal, the climate and energy proposal advanced by progressives that is meant to address the threat of climate change.
The climate measure is already supported by at least five senators seeking the Democratic nomination for president: Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Kamala Harris of California, Elizabeth Warren of MA and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.
Republicans showed on Tuesday that they are ready to use the resolution as a political weapon against those Democrats. "The green generation has risen up and they are saying they want this issue solved" as one of the top two or three issues in the 2020 election.
Former congressman and Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke speaks to thousands of people gathered to protest a U.S. -Mexico border wall that President Donald Trump has pushed, February 11, in El Paso, Texas.
As for Ocasio-Cortez, she's following along with the president's speech through Twitter, and she's calling it rich of Trump to criticize her when he reportedly can't make it through a daily briefing without giving up partway.
"We set a goal to get to net zero, rather than zero emissions, in 10 years because we aren't sure we'll be able to fully get rid of farting cows and airplanes that fast", a version of the document hosted by NPR reads.
"We're going to voting on that in the Senate".
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) also didn't seem too impressed with the Green New Deal resolution last week.
