A person familiar with the decision told Associated Press that Gase has agreed to replace Todd Bowles, who was sacked by the Jets after he went 24-40 in four seasons.
In fact, he is ecstatic to work with his new head coach.
"I think he's going to be a fantastic player", Romo said. Gase was the Broncos' offensive coordinator during Manning's record-breaking 2013 season. At the same time, I'm going to be me. Per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Peyton Manning sent along an endorsement of Gase to team CEO Christopher Johnson.
The second factor that pushed things in Gase's favor with the Jets' front office was his willingness to let others help him to build his staff.
"I think he's a fantastic coach", Romo said. It turns out he'll remain in the division, and face the Dolphins twice every regular season as a rival head coach. His teams went 5-1 against the Jets.
Darnold realizes that part of Gase's resume, and he doesn't see why he can't be added to it as well.
ESPN's Jeff Darlington reports that Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold spoke with Gase via FaceTime on Monday and felt like Gase was the right guy for the job. Gase's first National Football League job came in 2003 under Steve Mariucci in Detroit, where he worked his way up to quarterbacks coach in five years with the Lions. Darnold missed three games with a sprained foot midway through the season, but in four weeks after returning, he threw for 931 yards, six touchdowns and one interception with one lost fumble, completing 64 percent of his passes.
