Roger Federer outplayed Britain's Cameron Norrie 6-1, 6-1 to secure a winning start for defending champions Switzerland at the Hopman Cup in Perth on Sunday.

Norrie rarely challenged the world No.3, with Federer's win giving Switzerland a 1-0 lead over Great Britain ahead of Belinda Bencic's clash with Katie Boulter. This will be a very interesting tie especially if they go to the decisive mixed doubles.

The 37-year-old Swiss player had to fend off other break points in the seventh game and then sealed the first set with a successful volley.

Williams' US Open outburst came in reaction to the penalty handed by Ramos, who gave her a code violation for receiving coaching.

"I am happy in all aspects of my game that things were working - foot work, offensive play, serve, return - it was all there. I was like, 'It's ok, it's your first match and you'll get better.' I just kept trying to think that".

The holder of 20 major singles titles, Federer, who is eyeing third successive Australian Open crown called the upcoming game a "once-in-a-lifetime" match-up which he is waiting for with excitement.

Serena Williams overcame a sluggish start to win her opening match of the new season in Perth Monday, two weeks out from 2019's first Grand Slam.

World No. 2 Kerber beat Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to snap a five-match losing streak against the two-time Grand Slam victor. It means Federer and Williams will play against each other in the mixed doubles portion of that match.

In her first tournament outing since the controversial loss to Naomi Osaka in the US Open final in September, Serena Williams struggled early and her groundstrokes were erratic in the first set.

However the Spaniard wasn't going to let her own five-match winning run against the German go easily, and took the second set.

Boulter was much improved in set two, but Bencic held serve to make it 6-6 and then raced through the tie-break, which she won 7-0.

"All the credit is (to) David, coming back from a set down and break down", Zverev said.

The Swiss tennis great who claimed four titles previous year, including his sixth Australian Open trophy, said he is "motivated" for the 2019 tour after having intense off-season preparation.
