Day clearly has huge shoes to fill, following Meyer's incredible job at the helm of the Buckeyes.
Earlier this season, Meyer addressed some of the retirement rumors and said he planned on coaching beyond this season at Ohio State.
Brown said he loves and admires Meyer, and will miss him in coaching.
And neither does anybody else - including Meyer himself. CFT had caught wind of speculation that it wouldn't be surprising at all if Meyer were not the Buckeyes' head coach next season, whispers that grew a little louder given the embarrassing loss in West Lafayette this and what some have described as Meyer's "anguished... emotional... erratic" sideline demeanor.
Meyer might not have enjoyed such a choice if not for his ultra-impressive résumé on the field, as the Buckeyes have enjoyed an 82-9 record in his seven seasons. And, now, suddenly, he's retiring for good? "I can lie to you and say it is not important to me".
Despite the controversial blip in his career, Meyer easily had one of the most successful coaching careers of all time.
He's 54, still relatively young, and though the arachnoid cyst on his brain seemed to be exhibiting painful symptoms this season, the condition isn't something life threatening-and, more crucially, those symptoms will likely subside with some minimal medical intervention. Within weeks after leaving UF (and getting a $1 million retirement bonus on his way out the door), he was traveling the country as a roving ESPN college football commentator.
Day, like Riley at OU, had no real connection to Ohio State. A marquee win against Ohio State would be a valuable part in the process to restore the conference's credibility. Youngblood had considered Meyer a close friend - until he felt Meyer lied to him. "And Gene I both felt we had the right guy in Ryan". "When it turns out to not be the truth, that doesn't [put him] very high on my Christmas-card list".
A press conference is scheduled for this afternoon.
The university announced the move Tuesday. He's a second-year Ohio State assistant who had never before been a head coach. The investigation showed he tolerated bad behavior for years from Smith, including domestic-violence accusations, drug addiction, lies and other acts that directly clash with the values Meyer touts publicly.
Additionally, the football program announced that Ryan Day, who served as acting head coach for the first three games of the 2018 season while Meyer was suspended, will be named as OSU's next head football coach. "I recognize the toll that it takes", Smith said.
It's no secret, I am not big fan of Urban Meyer.
At Florida, he retired in similar fashion after the SEC Championship in the 2009 season, then unretired and stayed at Florida for one more year. However, you can not deny his greatness. And, of course, Meyer beat hated rival MI all seven times he faced them, including the last three with Jim Harbaugh as head coach.
