AWS CEO Andy Jassy unveiled the service, AWS Ground Station, at the company's annual conference, re:Invent, in Las Vegas.
AWS Ground Station is dubbed a fully managed network of ground station antennas around the world in close proximity to AWS infrastructure regions. "Ellie Mae is able to use the breadth and depth of the world's leading cloud to be more efficient and innovative, refocusing their manpower and capital on ways to automate the mortgage lending process instead of infrastructure procurement and management". Those who know how much capacity they will need well in advance can book ahead and pay less for downlink time.
The company will start with two ground stations this week, with plans to have 12 stations in operation by the middle of next year. It will monitor how demand develops before deciding how many more stations to add.
Additionally, the Blockchain Express is a five- to six-week cross-industry offering that will provide AWS' clients access to Accenture's specialists and range of services from which they can drive value from the distributed ledger technology within the enterprise. "Today, you must either build your own ground stations and antennae or obtain long-term leases with ground station providers, often in multiple countries, to provide enough opportunities to contact satellites as they orbit the globe".
Among the four services is AWS IoT SiteWise which is a new managed service that collects, structures, and searches IoT data from industrial facility devices and uses it to analyse equipment and process performance data.
Banco Santander's digital-only subsidiary Openbank has moved to the cloud, going all-in on Amazon Web Services. Their satellite data is used in vehicle navigation and for tracking global incidents where first responders can save people in disaster areas or war zones.
Charlie Bell, Senior Vice President of AWS said they are giving satellite customers the ability to dynamically scale their ground station antenna use based on actual need.
Customers and partners involved in the Ground Station preview included Lockheed Martin, Open Cosmos, HawkEye360 and DigitalGlobe, among others. "For space startups like Spire Global, AWS and Lockheed Martin are unlocking the potential of almost continuous and uninterrupted access to satellite data along with the ability to analyze and leverage that data using the broad and deep cloud services available in AWS", said Robert W. Sproles, Ph.D. and Program Manager, Ground Stations, for Spire Global, Inc.
Lockheed Martin has developed the Verge Antennae network to support the capture and delivery of satellite data to AWS.
In September, Reuters reported that AWS was in talks with Chile to house and mine massive amounts of data generated by the country's telescopes.
