A D.C. neighborhood advocacy group is having its say in what US officials have described as an elaborate global murder plot. The embassy's address is 601 New Hampshire Avenue NW.
The resolution is expected to pass.
The vote came after a briefing to senators by Trump administration officials in which Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said there was "no direct reporting" connecting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to the murder of the journalist, and Defense Secretary James Mattis said there was "no smoking gun" making the connection. The Trump administration has refused to rebuke Mohammed Bin Salman or imperil the long-standing USA relationship with the kingdom.
Khashoggi relocated to the U.S.in 2017 and was writing for the Washington Post at the time of his killing.
Freeland accompanied Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the summit, also attended by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
And police have been searching for the slain journalist's remains.
Trump has said it may never be known who was responsible for the killing, and in public comments - and a long and unusual statement last week - he reinforced the United States' long-standing alliance with the Saudis.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says "some kind of response" is needed from the United States for the Saudis' role in the gruesome death.
In a firm rebuke of President Donald Trump's Saudi Arabia policy, the Republican-controlled Senate voted 63-37 on Wednesday to advance a piece of legislation that would direct the president to withdraw US forces from assisting the Saudi-led intervention in Yemen. On Tuesday, he said that "what obviously happened, as basically certified by the Central Intelligence Agency, is completely abhorrent to everything the United States holds dear and stands for in the world".
"We believe that in naming people and in saying in the view of the government of Canada that someone is responsible for something so serious and so odious, it's very important to gather all the facts".
However, the announcement is mostly symbolic, as it is unlikely that a prosecution could commence before the crown prince leaves Argentina. Pompeo also published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, which said, in part, that "t$3 he Trump administration's effort to rebuild the U.S. -Saudi Arabia partnership isn't popular in the salons of Washington", but that "t$3 he kingdom is a powerful force for stability in the Middle East".
But that depends on what comes out of the classified briefing, according to Sen.
