'I haven't seen first responders and troopers cry in a long time, ' Slocum said on the fatalities. "When the children's father had to make identification of his children, that was just gut-wrenching". She said her son was hit in the past while pulling into the driveway.
"He didn't lose one kid, he lost all of his kids", said their uncle Elgin Ingle. "They were holding hands every day on the way to the bus stop including today...it looks like Alivia stepped in front of the auto for the boys".
He described Alivia as a girl who loved baseball and her family, especially her little brothers. "She chose to shield her brothers with that split second". He suffered multiple broken bones and injuries.
A fourth child was injured and taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital.
The boy was conscious and speaking to emergency workers before he was airlifted to the hospital, Slocum said.
Police say the bus was empty during the jarring accident, NBC Chicago reported.
"It's an unspeakable tragedy", he said.
On Tuesday night, the National Transportation Safety Board said they are sending a team to investigate the crash.
"Today, at approximately 7:15 a.m., there was a 911 call reporting a crash involving students from the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation", said Sgt.
