SC allows lottery winners to remain anonymous. Week after week, the prize money kept growing as no one has chosen all six winning numbers, and more and more people have been plunking down cash while chasing their lottery dream.
Unlike in many other countries, U.S. lottery winnings are taxable at the federal level, while some states also impose local taxes.
They'll take home $36.8 million a year for 30 years, or a lump sum of $624.381 million cash out of the $1.6 billion lottery total. SC was the first to announce the news. That was $656 million shared by winners in three states in March 2012. Most states are still processing their results.
These are the winning numbers for the $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot, the largest in USA history, which were announced at 8 p.m.
After days of watching the Mega Millions jackpot grow to a staggering $1.6 billion, the numbers for the biggest lottery in United States history are out.
The sole ticket to a Mega Millions jackpot of over $1.5 billion, or a cash sum of nearly $878 million, was sold somewhere in SC, lottery officials said early Wednesday. For now, lottery officials are publicly urging the victor to sign the back of the ticket, put it in a safe location, seek financial or legal advice from a trusted source.
The other states using this rule are Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas.
"Our board has a policy to protect the victor because of all the risk associated with having that much money", South Carolina Education Lottery Director William Hogan Brown told ABC's "Good Morning America". The previous record was a US$1.586 billion jackpot for a Powerball drawing in 2016. California is one of 10 states to exempt state income tax on lottery winnings. TV trucks and gawkers flooded the parking lot ahead of a news conference at the KC Mart and Exxon station, which sits at the bend of a road where Greenville's suburban sprawl gives way to farm fields.
The numbers Tuesday night were 5-28-62-65-70 Megaball 5.
Powerball officials made the first such move in October 2015, changing the odds of winning the jackpot from 1 in 175 million to 1 in 292.2 million.
The nation's largest lottery jackpots have rolled for a few months.
Rolling over is when people don't draw winning numbers for a jackpot, so the figure is added to the next prize amount. Mega Millions has not confirmed, and its website said the results are pending early Wednesday.
"The moment we've been waiting for finally arrived, and we couldn't be more excited", said Gordon Medenica, Lead Director of the Mega Millions Group.
Meanwhile, a Powerball drawing with a $620 million jackpot is set for Wednesday night. Two of those were sold in Virginia, and one was sold in the U.S. capital. "Now I know y'all have it!"
"I hope he will keep coming in", Patel said with a broad smile.
