Bad news came through the National Football League yesterday as the San Francisco 49ers fear that their talented quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo sustained a torn ACL during their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Losing Garoppolo for the season leaves a crater-sized hole on their QB depth chart as they're now left with just C.J. Beathard and are bringing in a slew of veteran signal-callers for workouts. The Niners struggled with Beathard last season before the midseason addition of Garoppolo changed their fortunes.
Garoppolo's left knee buckled just before Kansas City cornerback Steven Nelson delivered a big hit, ending what was supposed to be his first full season as a starter after just three games. After spending several minutes down on the field and then being evaluated on the sideline, the 26-year-old was eventually taken to the San Francisco locker room on the back of a cart. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will speak to the media at 4:00. This season, he has led the team to a 1-2 record with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
Garoppolo suffered the injury while trying to make a play late in the fourth quarter of Sunday's game.
