Cornerback Vontae Davis, a 30-year-old veteran, had not only withdrawn from a game on Sunday, but also from his National Football League career. Davis made it clear that money is not worth his physical or mental health and happiness.
Before Davis released his statement, Bills linebacker Lorenzo Alexander told reporters at Ralph Wilson Stadium that he had never seen anything like it.
Veteran cornerback Vontae Davis left the field at halftime of the game against the Los Angeles Chargers and decided he wasn't going back out there. Davis started his career with the Miami Dolphins, playing three seasons for the franchise that drafted him No. 25 overall.
Buffalo were trailing 28-6 at half-time, although they partially recovered - sans Davis - to earn a more respectable 31-20 defeat. But today on the field, reality hit me fast and hard: "I shouldn't be out there anymore", he said in a statement. I meant no disrespect to my team-mates and coaches.
"This was an overwhelming decision but I'm at peace with myself", it read.
"It's just completely disrespectful to his teammates", Alexander said.
