Kyle Whittingham was pacing across the Utah football practice field at the Eccles Football Complex Wednesday afternoon - during the opening practice of fall camp no less - when former ESPN reporter Brett McMurphy broke the news about Whittingham's good friend, former Utah and current Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and his long-time assistant coach Zach Smith's alleged spousal abuse.
Meyer previously told reporters last week that he was never told anything about the incident that resulted in injuries to Smith's ex-wife, Courtney.
The former assistant, Zach Smith, was sacked last week after an OH court granted a protective order sought by his ex-wife Courtney Smith.
The situation involving Urban Meyer at Ohio State has sent shockwaves across the sports world, and numerous coach's former players have been asked to weigh in on it.
The university said it will open an investigation into the allegations and offensive coordinator Ryan Day will serve as interim coach in Meyer's absence.
"Gene (Smith) and I agree that being on leave during this inquiry will facilitate its completion", Meyer said in a statement. "I've seen other coaches who would keep players and try to rehab them ... but I think it (zero tolerance on domestic violence) should be a rule in all of college football".
At the Big Ten Media Days in Chicago last week, Urban said he knew about the domestic violence allegations against Zach in 2009 but not 2015. Coach Jim Tressel was sacked in 2011 for lying to the NCAA and university of about rules violations committed by some of his players.
You can say you would've handled things differently, but that overlooks the larger, much more important, issue.
Would you still feel that way if Urban Meyer was, say, 53-28, and not 73-8, at Ohio State? In 2009, Smith was arrested on a charge that Courtney Smith later dropped.
In an interview with McMurphy, Courtney reportedly said she and Shelley regularly talked about Zach's abuse in 2015. Zach Smith was charged with criminal trespassing and a protection order was filed. Courtney Smith said her then-husband had assaulted her during an argument about their young children.
